Correction, lobsters and thank Thomas Jefferson (mllg)

to set the record straight she did not have roast pork in Abruzzo several years ago, she had breast of veal, and i too, think Canadians are great. but the defining moment was when they asked us about our massachusetts plates traveling across the American West. we explained that we had a Cape Cod sticker prominently stuck to our rear window so people wouldn't think we are normal working folk democrats from that most liberal of states. they'd associate us with lobsters and beaches instead. a red herring that helped us through previous challenges with conservative ranchers in New Mexico !

trip is about to begin in earnest as we are now in Chicago area visiting our 4 beautiful mid-west grandkids in their super new community. huge several acre park across the street, tennis courts, major playground equiopment, pool and community center, with elementary school and day care 2 minutes walk. their family room is a park teeming with kids.

with a car load of road food provided by mary, nuts and granola "slightly" sweetened and sprinkled with chocolate ("take a handful when you're drowsy" she advised) i should have anough to get to the west coast and back super awake, we depart for the great plains tomorrow.

have listened to first 4 cd's of stephen ambrose's "undaunted courage" . the first part is a wonderful account of Thomas Jefferson and his preparations for Meriweather Lewis' adventure to find the water route to the Pacific. Jefferson was a truly amazing man with a vision that made america the two ocean country that it became. without him, America would have been shaped by the New England founders who were more interested in their parochial federalist ways.

Jefferson knew the west had to be won to build an undivided nation from coast to coast, and with incredible persistence and knowledge he set the actions in motion to achieve that goal.
